President Javier Milei first promoted the LIBRA token on Friday, stating that funds raised through the initiative would benefit small and medium-sized enterprises.
However, within five hours, he deleted his post, later clarifying that he had not been fully aware of the project’s specifics and had decided to withdraw his support.
KIP Protocol, the entity behind the LIBRA token, announced that the project is backed by Animoca Ventures in Hong Kong and is affiliated with Animoca’s Open Campus initiative.
KIP Protocol also stated that the issuance and market-making responsibilities lie with Kelsier Ventures. The latter issued a statement claiming that Milei had initially pledged support but later reversed his position. Kelsier also announced that it would reinvest up to $100 million of its controlled funds into LIBRA tokens.
Chaofan Shou, co-founder of Solayer, a Solana-based re-staking protocol, alleged that key figures behind the LIBRA token were linked to individuals involved in previous cryptocurrency scandals. Shou’s analysis suggested financial ties between LIBRA’s market makers and figures associated with MELANIA, ENRON, and other controversial crypto projects.
In response to the growing concerns, the Argentine Presidential Office has requested the Anti-Corruption Office to investigate whether any government officials, including President Javier Milei, engaged in misconduct. The findings will be submitted to the courts to determine potential legal violations by companies or individuals linked to the KIP Protocol.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that opposition lawmakers are considering impeachment proceedings against Milei, arguing that his endorsement of the failed cryptocurrency has embarrassed the nation on an international scale.
