To facilitate this, BBVA integrates trading and custody through its app, aligning with their established track record in crypto services since 2021.

Spanish Retail Investors Could Drive New Capital

The launch could attract new capital into Bitcoin and Ether from Spanish retail investors. This marks BBVA as the first major Spanish bank in the regulated crypto trading space.

The introduction upholds MiCA compliance, providing enhanced protections for investors, and potentially influencing other European banks to adopt similar services.

BBVA Builds on Crypto Success in Switzerland, Turkey

BBVA previously launched similar services in Switzerland in 2021 and Turkey in 2023. These initiatives paved the way for newer markets as BBVA expanded its crypto services.

Based on BBVA’s historical trends, retail adoption is expected to rise, strengthening crypto’s position in traditional finance, notably within European markets.

Gonzalo Rodríguez, Head of Retail Banking for Spain, BBVA, said, “We want to make it easier for our retail customers in Spain to invest in crypto-assets, through a simple and easy-to-access digital solution on their cell phone. Our goal is to support them as they explore digital assets, backed by the strength and security of a bank like BBVA.”
