Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs vetoes Bitcoin reserve bill, citing cryptocurrency risks and emphasizing sound state investment practices.

What to Know:
  • Arizona’s governor vetoes Bitcoin reserve bill, halting state investment in cryptocurrency.
  • No state funds involved; Bitcoin status remains unchanged.
  • Decision signals continued resistance to official Bitcoin adoption.

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed Senate Bill 1025, preventing Arizona from investing in Bitcoin, citing potential risks associated with cryptocurrency investments.

The veto halts efforts to position Arizona as a leader in state-level Bitcoin reserves, highlighting ongoing caution surrounding official cryptocurrency endorsements.

Arizona’s Bitcoin Reserve Bill Halted by Governor

Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed a proposed bill aiming to allow Arizona to hold Bitcoin as part of state reserves. The decision was based on concerns regarding cryptocurrency risks. Hobbs stated, “Virtual currency is an ‘untested’ investment.”

The legislation, supported by Arizona State Senator Wendy Rogers, would have allowed investments in virtual currencies by the state treasury and retirement systems.

Veto Blocks State’s Cryptocurrency Investment Plans

The veto precludes any immediate Arizona state investment in Bitcoin, preventing a public-sector signal for wider institutional adoption at the state level which many Bitcoin advocates view critically.

Prominent Bitcoin advocates criticized the decision, reflecting frustration among crypto supporters with the government’s cautious approach to cryptocurrency adoption.

State-Led Bitcoin Initiatives Face Resistance

Similar U.S. state-led Bitcoin legislation efforts have failed, maintaining a precedent against digital asset reserves. No state has passed such laws yet.

The veto supports current U.S. trends where cryptocurrency remains excluded from official reserve considerations, suggesting ongoing caution among state governments.
