What Kraken Launched on Kraken Pro

Kraken said in its July 16, 2026 announcement that eligible professional and institutional clients can now trade XBT/USD and ETH/USD options directly on Kraken Pro. The contracts launched as European-style, linear, USD-settled products. For related coverage, see Kraken Unveils AI-Driven Financial Intelligence App Upgrade.

Initial access begins through a request-for-quote workflow, meaning eligible clients source pricing on demand rather than trading from a continuous public order book. The rollout follows Kraken’s broader push into professional tooling, including a recent overhaul of Kraken Pro fee tiers for high-volume traders. For related coverage, see T. How the BTC and ETH Options Are Structured

The launch includes weekly, monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual expiries across both contracts. All of the new options are linear and settled in U.S. dollars.

Portfolio margin is enabled by default, and Kraken said collateral can be posted in more than 30 currencies. That margin model lets traders offset risk across correlated positions rather than funding each leg separately.

Kraken’s contract specifications page lists minimum order sizes of 0.01 contracts for XBT/USD and 0.1 contracts for ETH/USD, with maximum position sizes of 10 BTC and 100 ETH and tick sizes of 1 USD and 0.1 USD. Settlement runs against the BTCOPTRR and ETHOPTRR reference rates using a 30-minute observation window before 8 UTC.

Why Kraken’s Rollout Matters in the Institutional Options Market

Kraken is entering a market where Coinbase, through its Deribit acquisition, and CME already hold established institutional options exposure, Finance Magnates reported. The USD-settled, portfolio-margined structure is Kraken’s pitch to clients accustomed to traditional derivatives plumbing.

The launch extends Kraken’s institutional buildout alongside consumer moves such as its Mastercard debit card across the UK and Europe and a planned mobile app rebuild around AI trading agents.

Kraken said European client access is planned for the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory confirmation. That phased approach mirrors how availability and investor protections differ by jurisdiction.

Alexia Theodorou of Kraken framed the strategic rationale in the announcement.

“Crypto options activity is still a fraction of what it is in traditional markets but the gap is closing.” — Alexia Theodorou, Kraken

The context is a cautious spot market: Bitcoin traded near $64,410, up about 0.6% on the day, while the broader Fear & Greed Index sat at 28, in Fear territory. Institutional options venues typically deepen during exactly these hedging-heavy conditions.
