Sky Finalizes MKR to SKY Token Upgrade Proposal

Sky’s governance team, Atlas Axis, has proposed the final migration from MKR to SKY with staking functionality, anticipated between May 15-19, 2025.

The proposal’s significance lies in transitioning to SKY as the exclusive governance token, enhancing protocol income distribution, and offering USDS incentives to holders.

Atlas Axis Leads Final MKR to SKY Migration

Sky’s proposal, led by Atlas Axis, aims to complete the transition from MKR to SKY. It marks a milestone in their rebranding strategy since 2024. The migration addresses final updates necessary for the protocol’s evolution.

“I fully support the proposal from Atlas Axis to finalize the upgrade from MKR to SKY, and it is great to see them taking the lead on proposing larger scale upgrades to the system like this. Getting past the full upgrade of MKR to SKY is one of the last pieces missing before Sky can transition to zero fixed costs at the end of 2025, which will ensure an even greater portion of the income the protocol generates goes to the benefit of SKY buybacks, or SKY staking rewards.” — Rune Christensen, Co-founder, Sky

Currently, only 14% of MKR has transitioned to SKY. The aim is for SKY to become the primary governance token with a 1:24,000 exchange rate.

Staking and 14% Migration: Market Implications

The proposed changes could bolster the financial stability of the Sky protocol by introducing staking. It may affect the market, with only 14% migrated more innovative actions needed to encourage swaps.

The protocol’s update could lead to increased incentives for SKY holders, thereby enhancing the value and utility of the token. Sky’s plan also aligns with the strategic goal of eliminating fixed costs.

Rebranding to Sky: Future Impact of Past Moves

In 2024, MakerDAO’s rebranding to Sky set the stage for these updates. Similar past transitions have led to significant market shifts, with varying success levels.

Based on current data and historical trends, a completed migration could stabilize Sky’s governance system. The introduction of staking along with USDS incentives appears poised for positive long-term market reception.
