Trump signs ‘Take It Down Act’ to combat non-consensual AI deepfakes, prioritizing online safety.

What to Know:
  • Trump signs federal act targeting AI deepfake exploitation.
  • Law circumvents bipartisan efforts against online abuse.
  • Immediate impact on social media compliance, not cryptocurrencies.

President Donald Trump signed the “Take It Down Act” on May 19, 2025, in Washington, D.C., making it illegal to distribute non-consensual intimate images, including AI-generated deepfakes.

The law establishes a new federal crime focusing on online sexual exploitation, particularly targeting AI deepfake imagery, with significant support from bipartisan lawmakers and tech companies.

Trump Enacts Law Targeting AI Exploitation

President Trump signed the “Take It Down Act” to enforce legal penalties on non-consensual AI images. Senator Ted Cruz spearheaded this bipartisan effort to curb exploitative content. As Trump stated, “We will not tolerate online sexual exploitation. With the increase in AI image creation, many women have faced harassment through deepfakes and other explicit images… This is fundamentally wrong and represents a deeply abusive situation.”

Supported by First Lady Melania Trump, the act reflects a national effort to combat online abuse. Meta backs this initiative to bolster compliance across digital platforms.

Social Media Platforms Must Comply Swiftly

The legislation demands immediate compliance by social media platforms, which could face legal challenges if failing to remove harmful content. This law aims to deter the malicious use of AI technologies

While the act focuses on victim protection and legal accountability, its impact is not directly felt in financial or crypto markets. However, compliance costs may influence tech enterprises.

Federal Law Steps Up Online Protection

Similar measures in U.S. states set precedence but were limited. The federal law marks a comprehensive step in national protection against online abuse through technology. Senator Ted Cruz noted that “The TAKE IT DOWN ACT is a landmark victory for victims of revenge porn and deepfake image exploitation.”

Experts anticipate that the act will reduce exploitative behavior online, although it may ignite debates on potential overreach and digital rights limitations.
